The Part of You That Never Learned to Receive
Ever notice how you can guide a client through a massive somatic shift at 2:00 PM... but you can't remember to eat lunch?
You can hold space for someone else's deepest pain for hours.
But when it comes to your own body, your own needs? There's a wall there.
I see this pattern so often in the therapists I work with. And honestly... I've lived it myself.
We're fluent in other people's healing. But when it comes to our own inner landscape, we become strangers.
Here's what I've come to understand...
You can only take your clients as deep as you've been willing to go yourself.
If your own body has a "do not disturb" sign on it... if you've learned to push through hunger and exhaustion and call it professionalism... you're hitting a ceiling in your work.
You're trying to guide clients to a place you haven't fully visited.
I think of it as the helper's paradox.
Most of us developed our "helper parts" early. Maybe you were seven years old and figured out that if you were okay, everyone else could survive. Those parts of you learned to give endlessly. But they never learned how to receive.
They think needing help is too expensive. They think if you stop for five minutes, everything falls apart.
And here's the thing... your clients can feel it. They can sense when your presence is thin. When you're running on coffee and the fumes of their breakthroughs instead of your own grounded floor.
I wrote about this recently... about a therapist I'll call Rachel, who realized her daughter was already starting to mirror her burnout patterns. It stopped her in her tracks.
If you're tired of standing next to a river while you're dying of thirst... I think this might land for you.
You don't have to be a hero. You're allowed to be human.
Warmly,
Esther
