When the Pattern Shows Up in the Room

I was talking through a case recently where almost half the session kept disappearing into the same conversation.

The client would say she felt misunderstood.

The therapist would explain what she meant.

The client would explain why that still wasn’t what she meant.

The therapist would try again.

And suddenly 30 minutes were gone.

What struck me was that this wasn’t something interrupting the therapy.

This was the therapy.

Because the exact pattern the client struggled with everywhere else had quietly walked into the room and started organizing the session.

She desperately wanted to feel understood.

There was care available.

But she had a very hard time actually taking that care in.

In Movement Vocabulary language, there was something important happening around pull.

Now, recognizing that changes the case.

But it doesn’t automatically tell you what to say when you’re sitting there and realizing…

Oh.

We’re doing it again.

That’s the piece I’ve been wanting to spend more time on.

Because I could teach the five movements for hours — and actually, I did. Our original 90-minute workshop somehow turned into almost two and a half hours.

But there’s another level after recognition.

How do you interrupt the pattern without shaming the client?

How do you name what’s happening between you?

How do you stop defending your intention and actually use the moment clinically?

That’s implementation.
