When the Therapist’s Clarity Becomes the Client’s Urgency

There’s a particular kind of case where it becomes very easy to know what the client should do.

Leave the relationship. Set the boundary. Stop calling him. Say no. Push back.

And sometimes we are completely right.

But I was talking through a case recently where I became much more interested in a different question:

Whose urgency is organizing the treatment right now?

The client was in a painful relationship, and the therapist understandably wanted her out of it.

But every time the client tried to leave, her whole system collapsed.

It didn’t feel like ending a relationship.

It felt like losing the thing keeping her alive.

So the more we talked, the clearer it became that immediately pushing toward separation wasn’t necessarily the work.

The work might be creating enough steadiness that separation eventually becomes possible.

A different relational experience. More capacity to yield. More internal support.

Enough safety that one day she can push from a place that actually belongs to her.

And this is one of the things Movement Vocabulary has been sharpening for me.

Because once you can see the movement a client needs, it can be tempting to start marching toward it.

But implementation asks for more restraint than that.

Sometimes the therapist’s clarity guides the treatment, and sometimes the therapist’s discomfort quietly masquerades as clarity.

Knowing the difference matters.

That’s part of what we’re working on in the Movement Vocabulary Implementation Workshop: how to take what you learned in the first workshop and turn it into an actual treatment map…

without rushing your client three chapters ahead simply because you can already see the ending.

That restraint is a huge part of implementation.

You may already know where the work is eventually going. But your job is still to know where the client actually is now… and what the next honest piece of treatment is from there.

That’s where I help you get much sharper in the Movement Vocabulary Implementation Workshop.

The workshop took place live on Thursday, August 27, and everyone who registered received access to the recording as well.

The workshop was $97 to join live, and now that the live session has ended, the recording is available separately for $147.

If you missed the live workshop, you can still get access to the recording here:
