The Clients Who Broke Every Theory I Had
It's been over 15 years since I started as a trauma therapist.
Since then, I've trained in EMDR, somatic therapies, IFS, and pretty much every advanced modality a serious trauma therapist eventually adds to their toolkit.
I built a thriving practice. My clients got better.
On paper, everything was working.
Then I started meeting clients who broke every theory I had.
Not because they were more traumatized. Not because they were resistant.
But because the questions I'd been asking for years...weren't the right ones.
There was one client who had built a business from nothing, raised two children on her own, and never once asked anyone for help.
Not because she didn't want support.
Because Yield had never developed.
Her body had never learned what it felt like to be held.
Another apologized before she'd even finished a sentence.
Not because she lacked confidence.
Because Push had never become safe.
Her body never learned that it could take up space without losing connection.
Another had breakthrough after breakthrough.
She understood everything. She could explain every pattern.
And yet... her life barely changed.
Not because the therapy wasn't working.
Because Pull had never fully developed.
Nothing stayed open long enough to become lasting change. For years, I told myself stories that many trauma therapists quietly tell themselves.
"This client is just harder to reach."
"Maybe I need another consultation."
"Maybe this is simply as far as they're able to go."
Until something happened that I never expected.
I started seeing the same patterns...in myself.
The places where I stayed agreeable instead of speaking.
The dreams I hesitated to reach for.
The care, love, and support that I struggled to fully receive.
That's when everything changed.
I realized I'd been naming the surface.
People-pleasing.
Avoidance.
Attachment issues.
Resistance.
But underneath those labels...were unfinished developmental movements.
The body wasn't refusing change.
It was trying to complete experiences it had never been given the safety to finish.
That realization changed everything.
Not just how I worked with clients.
How I understood myself.
Because movement vocabulary isn't just a clinical framework.
It's a way of understanding what the nervous system was never allowed to finish.
Once I could see that... I couldn't unsee it.
Every session changed.
Every treatment plan changed.
Even my own life changed.
If you've ever walked out of a session knowing something important happened...but not having the language to explain it...
I think you'll understand why this work has become such a deep passion of mine.
That's exactly what I teach inside the replay. Not simply a new intervention.
A completely different way of seeing. You can watch it here:
With love,
Esther
